Rutin is a kind of vitamin drug, which is a natural flavonoid glycoside. It can be derived from such plants as rue leaf, tobacco leaf, jujube, apricot, orange peel, tomato, buckwheat flower and so on. Rutin is a light yellow needle-like crystal, soluble in pyridine, formyl and lye, slightly soluble in ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate, and almost insoluble in chloroform, ether, benzene, carbon disulfide and petroleum ether. Rutin has the effect of reducing capillary permeability and brittleness, and can maintain and restore the normal elasticity of capillary. Clinically, rutin can be used to prevent and cure hypertension, cerebral haemorrhage, diabetic retinal hemorrhage and hemorrhagic purpura. Rutin is also used as a food antioxidant, a pigment and nutrient enhancer. In addition, it can be used as sunscreen whitening cosmetic.
