Lignans are a kind of natural organic compounds formed by polymerization of 2 or 3 molecules of phenylpropyl groups in different forms, which are mostly distributed in angiosperms and gymnosperms. More than 200 lignans and more than 100 new lignans have been obtained from the plant kingdom. The traditional Chinese medicine Schisandra, Acanthopanax senticosus, Liaogewang, Trachelospermi, Burdock Seed, Polygala, Forsythia, Safflower, Asarum, etc., all contain lignans. In plants, lignans exist in the form of free or glycosides, and most of them have optical activity. They are anti-cancer, anti-fungal, insecticidal, white blood cell increase, alanine aminotransferase reduction, liver protection, cough relieving, diarrhea has a wide range of applications. Mass spectrometry is a sensitive analysis technique. Even at low abundance, it can detect, identify and quantify various plant lignans by measuring its mass and characterizing its chemical structure. MS instruments can be combined with gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC) to effectively separate organic molecules from complex samples. A comprehensive analysis of plant lignans helps to clarify how plants respond to different conditions such as mutations, stress, and lignan treatments.
