Geniposide and Genipin
In general, the higher levels of glycosides are not components that act directly in the blood, but their metabolites, aglycones and their derivatives. After the drug is taken, it changes into another structure under the action of digestive system enzymes, stomach acid, intestinal bacteria, intestinal membrane enzymes, etc., and enters the blood to take effect. For example, the geniposide in gardenia must be transformed into kynepin by β glucosidase of intestinal bacteria in order to be absorbed and thus play the medicinal effect of promoting bile secretion. Accurate detection of geniposide metabolites in urine, blood and other samples will facilitate the progress of related research.
Genipin is a natural crosslinking agent extracted from plants, with multiple active functional groups and low cytotoxicity. The ring crosslinks formed by Genipin are more stable than other reticular and linear crosslinks.
Geniposide have a wide range of pharmacological activities such as hypoglycemic and lipid-regulating, neurotrophic and neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anti-Alzheimer's, and anticancer. Studies with geniposide and genipin as precursors, through a series of chemical reactions, can lead to compounds with similar chemical backbones, providing a shortcut to find better therapeutic drugs.
